Letter from Wiki Product Manager[edit source]

By way of introduction, my name is Ben Bennett and I’ve recently joined the FamilySearch team as the product manager for the Wiki and Forums. Put simply, my job is to ensure that your experience, as contributors and users of the Wiki and Forums is excellent. To this end, an apology is in order.

As you know, we recently implemented a new user ID/sign in process for the FamilySearch Wiki. As we implemented this new system, I personally heard from many of you. Many of you shared with me problems that were occurring for you as you tried to sign in, edit or do other things that resulted in lost work, lost time and frustration for you, our key contributors and users. Please accept my sincere apology for the poor performance and poor experience associated with the Wiki during the past few weeks. Please also accept my commitment that the FamilySearch team will learn from this experience and do all that we can to prevent situations like this in the future. To this end, I wanted to share with you ...continue

Welcome![edit source]

Hello, Laralee, and welcome to FamilySearch Wiki! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like this place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username and the date. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there.

It was decided at the community on November 17, that regular attendees at the meeting would be given an opportunity to review the welcome message and test out the {{helpme}} template.

Again, welcome!

Please vote on search result title link color
[edit source]

Some users have reported that the red color of the article title links in search results are confusing because in a Mediawiki site, a red link means a link to a page that has no content. There is a poll on the forums as to whether to make the links blue instead, which would also conform to what Google and Bing do. Please read the thread/explanation and vote. Thanks![edit source]

Just a note of thanks for all of your hard work! It is appreciated! Kara 15:20, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Additional Information[edit source]

Added information about images online and Poor Law Union All Poor Law Unions have linked pages wherever possible. If you would like to collaborate on content for county parishes let me know. The collection England Cornwall Parish registers was published under a week ago. Image loadings which are problematic are described in their page.

Poor Law Union links are provided for all online collections at time of publication

Quick Note of Appreciation[edit source]

We wanted to send out a quick letter of appreciation for all your hard work and dedication in getting the FamilySearch Records project off the ground. The information you provide is invaluable to those users who are searching out further information about collections in FamilySearch; it helps them make a deeper connection with their research, especially when it has to do with their own ancestry. It’s your contributions that are keeping the project rolling forward. Thank you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We’d love to hear from you and help you out in any way we can.

The FamilySearch Records Team

Laralee - how is retirement going?  Haven't seen you on the Community Meeting call recently.  You are missed...  Drop me a note and let me know how you're doing with all that time on your hands (ha!). Lise 02:10, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Laralee,

I'd love to hear your thoughts about the importance of user pages!  Can you take a minute and add your thoughts on the Forum thread I've started?  Lise 02:16, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Though your name is on as a welcoming member I am not sure with all the other things you were doing on the Wiki if you do welcoming now or if you are still serving on a mission, I would love to hear from you. Dawne

We want to improve the process for welcoming new authors and editors in the Wiki. I want to make each member of the committee aware of some changes coming in June:

 We will have another Welcome Message Template designed to be more individualized. The others will be there too but we hope that you will use this new welcome message. Steve Cottrell will be helping us with the Template, a special thanks to him.
Please read more carefully what the contributor or editor have put on the page. The current steps listed for reviewing the contributions are good to follow.
Avoid adding the welcome message before following the steps outlined.

The Question Templates will stay the same.

We thank you again for all you do.

Thanks[edit source]

Hi Laralee! I just wanted to express my appreciation for the resources that you added on the African American Research pages. I am one of the admins on the Facebook page:

I have been trying to make additions which will help the community.  I post the links to Wiki pages there.  Thank you so much! SavingStories (Robin)

FamilySearch Wiki:Neutral point of view[edit source]

Hi Larelee, Enjoy Your work and want to just help. As the above title shows we strive to write from a neutral view. On the new page Ohio Talk:Ohio Record Selection Table Table the talk page Talk:Ohio Record Finder show a comment that you might want to consider. Also you may want to look at the following page for possible ways to write on Record Selection :England Record Finder. Hope this helps you in finishing this page. Doddington Shropshire[edit source]

Hi, I am a member of the support team monitoring your work.  We appreciate your contributions.  However,

Your attempt to redirect the Doddington page to the Doddington, Shropshire page failed because there is no Doddington, Shropshire page.  Is there another Doddington page appropriate for redirect?  Please let us know.

Sincerely, Parrisl 22:54, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the assistance. The Doddington page has been redirected to the Dodington page. No change has been made on the title as that is a seperate issue. Have a good day, Parrisl 19:43, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Extinct Counties and Down East Migration Route on the Maine page[edit source]

Hi Laraleepn,

I have been assigned to write articles for the red links on the Maine page. The problem is, I cannot find any information regarding the East and West extinct counties or the Down East Migration Route. I have searched the internet and received information from two of the Maine libraries indicating no information on either of these counties or the migration route. Is there a resource for the information that I have been unable to uncover?

Sincerely, Parrisl 05:42, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for the response. In viewing the Massachusetts page there were several counties listed as being seceded to Maine, none of which were East or West. Further research revealed no information regarding those counties in Massachusetts. Parrisl 05:42, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Laraleepn

In the wiki we are looking at wiki pages created or worked on by people in the wiki and we found your name mentioned:01:15, 10 January 2010 on this page:,_Schleswig-Holstein,_Preussen,_Germany&action=history

We wondered if you were still interested in continuing to work on this page as it hasn't been worked on or looked at since:21:44, 1 August 2011 by you.

Thank you and we appreciate everything that you have done for the wiki. Take care and have a great day.
