Census and Household Population Registers[edit | edit source]

These records can be used to verify family linkages from other records. After 1956 they can be used as a substitute for civil registration. They include census enumerations, population and family registers.

Earliest records begin about 1909 and may contain names of residents, relationship to head of house; sex, sometimes place of birth, race, civil status, military status, literacy status. Family registers after 1956 include detailed birth and marriage data for all family members.

Records can be found at the National Archives, National Civil Registration Office, local prefecture archives. National archives copies prior to 1972 may have been destroyed.
