Hearth Tax

A transcription of the 1674 hearth tax of Suffolk has been published with the title “Suffolk in 1674 being the hearth tax returns”. This book includes the names of householders arranged by place, whether or not they were liable to pay the tax and the number of hearths in each dwelling. There is a detailed introduction and an index of all persons. It is the fullest list of people living in Suffolk earlier than the 1841 census.
