History[edit | edit source]

From the original expectation that each parish would make provision for the local poor, Spilsby had a town workhouse as early as 1797.

The enactment of the Poor Law Amendment Act in 1834 lead to the formation of the Spilsby Poor Law Union on 19 March 1837 and the building during 1837-1838 of the Union workhouse for over 60 parishes within its jurisdiction.

The Union was divided into sub districts for Alford, Spilsby and Wainfleet. These also formed subdistricts for civil registration although these were subject to reorganisation.

Few records of the Union survive at Lincolnshire Archives.
