Overview

The general purpose of a road map through Italian Civil Registration records is to provide a guide through the multi-year collections. Tables below list the starting image and ending image for each year's entries, along with the image number associated with the index for that year. Color changes within each table highlight a transition from one image collection to another. By general convention greens are used for births (Nati), yellows for marriages (Matrimoni), and reds for deaths (Morti). Light blue indicates that multiple record types are present in the same collection.

This particular road map is intended to provide a guide through the multi-year records files for Tortorici.

Index Order

Index pages for Tortorici's vital records vary in their ordering technique, sometimes from year to year and sometimes from one type of record to another for the same year. Records for each year are sorted within each index as follows:

Marriage records, when alphabetically arranged, are placed in order by the groom's name.

When ordering is done by surname, persons with a "Di" prefix attached to their surname are generally alphabetized by the actual surname. Persons with dual surnames (e.g., Roltino Sciammetta) are generally sorted by their first surname. Dual surnames pose the additional difficulty that, in some cases, one of the names may be omitted; e.g., Felicia Roltino Scimmetta might be found as Felicia Roltino or Felicia Sciammetta.

Finally, there are instances where names are given in transposed order; e.g., in an index listing surnames first, one or more entries might appear with a person's given name first.

Embedded "Allegati"

A number of supporting attachments -- an informal set of "Allegati" documents -- may be found in the images between two years. These documents frequently support the marginal notes made on the entries for a given year.

The most common appearance for these documents is in the birth records section. Here, one will frequently find a document related to the marriage or death of someone whose birth entry appears in that given year. For example, if a marginal note for a person'd birth in 1880 states that the person was maried in 1900, a document describing the marriage in 1900 is likely to be found in the documents following the index for 1880.

These attachments tend to be grouped into similar categories; i.e., marriages, deaths, etc, but otherwise are not necessarily in any particular order.

Researchers who find a marginal note for a person of interest should check these attachments to verify the claim noted. There is at least one case in which a marginal notation of a marriage was made on the wrong person's birth record; other such errors may exist.

The births records from 1866 to 1903 are split in two collections. Between these two extremes, the missing years are: 1869, 1870, 1871, 1878, 1883 and 1902.

Among the 32 years of available birth records, the indexes are missing from: 1866, 1867, 1868, 1874, 1875, 1881, 1886, 1888, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897 and 1899.
