From the formation of the Caistor Poor Law Union,Lincolnshire it provided for residents of Grimsby replacing the earlier Grimsby House of Industry. However the rapid growth of population in Grimsby necessitated the formation in 1890 of a separate Poor Law Union. The new workhouse opened in 1894.

For more information on the history of the workhouse, see Peter Higginbotham's web site: www.workhouses.org.uk
