Goiás, a state in central Brazil, is home to rugged savanna, colonial-era towns and large-scale agriculture. Founded during the 1700s, the gold-rush towns of Pirenópolis and Goiás Velho (the former state capital) are distinguished by their Portuguese-colonial architecture and vibrant Christian festivals.
