Chapelry History[edit | edit source]
"CHEETHAM, [St Mark,] a township [chapelry as of 1794], in the parish and union of Manchester, hundred of Salford, S. division of the county of Lancaster, 2 miles north by west of Manchester. The river Irwell separates the township from Salford. St Luke's ecclesiastical district was created in 1839 (which see) to include portions of Crumpsall and Broughton. St. Thomas Redbank Church, at the corner of Derby-street, was built by 1843. There were two meeting-houses for Wesleyan Methodists, with a burial-ground and a school attached to one of them; also a place of worship for Associated Methodists. St. Chad's Roman Catholic chapel, in York-street, was built in 1847."[1]
Cheetham Hill St Mark is an Ecclesiastical Parish in the county of Lancashire, created in 1839 from Manchester, Lancashire Genealogy Ancient Parish. Other places in the parish include: Crumpsall , and Cheetham St Luke, Lancashire Genealogy.
Consecrated as chapelry 24th July 1794 by Dr. William Markham the 22nd Bishop of Chester as chapelry within the Chester Diocese. The Rev. Charles Ethelston became the first vicar.
The church closed in 1982 and was demolished c.1998
