Territorial and State[edit | edit source]
Censuses were taken to track the rapid population growth as families came to Washington. Originally used to determine new counties, districts for elections and taxation, and even statehood, censuses are now a mainstay in genealogical research.
Online territorial censuses are available from:
- Washington Digital Archives Collections (Free, indexes only)
- Censuses are listed by year, then county. Several federal census indexes are included in this collection.
- Years of territorial or state-funded censuses: 1847, 1851, 1854, 1857, 1871, 1875, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1894, 1898
- Ancestry.com ($, indexes and images) For the list of years, scroll to About Washington State and Territorial Censuses, 1857-1892.
