Västmanland was occupied after the Ice Age. Around 990, the oldest city of Västmanland, Västerås, was founded. Starting 1120, this was also the seat of the diocese of Västerås. In the 14th century, many mines started being used. The northern parts of the province were mostly unoccupied forests, until emigrating Finns started to settle in the area.
The population of Västmanland was roughly 309,400 people in 2016.
