History[edit | edit source]
Information about the Landskap, its location and history. Include which counties are in the Landskap.
Västerbotten was occupied around 9000 years ago, mainly by hunters.[1] Documents from the 14th century mention expansion of the Swedish government in the area, but borders between Russia and Sweden were still unclear. During the 16th century the area counts about 200 villages. Wars with Russia bring great damage to the area in the 18th and 19th century. Until then, small parts of modern day Finland also belong to this area. The borders were regulated in 1810, following the Treaty of Fredrikshamn.
The population of Västerbotten was roughly 220,200 people in 2016.[2]
