Changing Pages[edit source]

Thanks for fixing the links. David may contact you about the Main Page idea. I understand both sides, but we need to compromise so everyone feels comfortable. When you wanted freedom to change the pages gives me pause. Making the pages intuitive for you, may not be intuitive for me or someone else. And I would hope you would trust the people on our team. Changing it may do more harm than good.

One good news, we have come to a compromise on the Quick Facts/History. We are going to use Historical Facts for the opening section. Since on the Manual of Style discussion page they have said the Local History is to be called History. And most of us did not like Quick Facts. David Samuelson and Beth have been discussing this for some time, I have talked with Mike R. about it too.

Lisa has some great additions to Land Records. And Charlene will be tackling Taxes. The Achives or South Carolina has some early ones we need to mention.

Let us know how we can help you. I'm glad we get to highlight South Carolina. I'm saddened that the poster wasn't prepared for Illinois, I was hoping we could pass that out our booth. I pushed for the poster with Laurie and Linda.

Update[edit source]

I hope you saw the last email. Most of us have been pulled off on to other projects that have to be done yesterday. We are moving ahead slowly. Hope you are having some fun. Look at Charleston, David has split Charleston county. Let us know what you think.pnh 00:42, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank You[edit source]

Thanks for your contributions to the Allegany County, Maryland page.  We have a FHC patron who came in last week, very excited to show us what he learned on the wiki and what he found in the digital collections of the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a result.  Being Catholic, he also pointed out to the us that Richmond (Virginia) is in that same Archdiocese. Good info! Now I just need to figure out how to incorporate that into the Richmond Virginia article...  I'm sure most of us wouldn't think to look in Baltimore, Maryland for Richmond, Virginia church records!  Lise 14:45, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your multiple contributions to the Virginia portion of the Wiki. Those links will be very helpful to those researching. I hope that you come back often to share your knowledge. I see that you are new on the Wiki, so if you have any concerns, questions, or suggestions, let me know! --Gregorybean Williamsburg VA 18:18, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Again, Thank you so much for your contributions. You have obviously spent a LOT of time contributing and I think it is amazing. Thank you so much. Gregorybean, Williamsburg, VA 02:30, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Your template for the Virginia infobox at the bottom of Virginia pages is amazing. Thank you so much for building it. You are doing great things for this Wiki. Thank you. Gregorybean, Williamsburg, VA 23:28, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia template[edit source]

Hi Nathan,

I have rolled back your recent edits to the {{Wikipedia}} template that had caused the links to be malformed. Before doing so I tried to understand what you were trying to change but could not figure it out. It just looked like using the FCK editor had caused some of the code to be converted from natural text to coded text ie &#124. I would be pleased to help make changes that are need, just reply to this message or add your comments to the template talk page. --Steve 05:52, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Text Wrap Issue on Virginia page[edit source]

Hi Nathan,

Below that great clickable map of Virginia counties, the text to the Research Tools section was bleeding into the margins of the page.  I reset the width to 100%, which pulls it back to the size of the text above the map and nav box.  But I'm guessing your intent was to let that text fill the width of the map and nav box? If that's the case, 196% was too wide.  FYI.  Lise 12:22, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Adoption sign inside infobox with custom text[edit source]

Hi Nathan, I've made progress with request to add custom text to adoption signs and also placing them inside the an infobox. Take a look at Yell County, Arkansas Genealogy as an example of what can now be done. I would be please to hear your feedback. --Steve 15:22, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Steve, Hey that's fantastic. I think that's just what we were looking for. I don't know if Wilma's in today (it was Turkey Day here in the States yesterday), but I'll touch bases with her early next week and see if we can start spreading this new sign! It looks great. Thanks again. Murphynw 15:25, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm glad you like it. I have made the needed amendments to all the adoption sign templates so that they can now utilise the custom text field if required. I have also update the respective documentation. Look forwarding to hear from you and Wilma next week. Have a great weekend. --Steve 15:54, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Headings on County Pages for Utah[edit source]

Hi Murphynw,

We appreciate the discussions and decisions made by a community of experts and interested parties regarding headings on the county pages especially for New York and Illinois, We want to adopt many of those changes and adapt some specifically for Utah. Will you please review the page for FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Utah County Headings county headings in Utah and make comments on its discussion page?

Some volunteers for WikiProject Utah have already begun adapting the county pages. Your great suggestions will be implemented later, and we need to move now to prepare for a big push in January 2012.

Making your comments on the discussion page will allow for transparency, progress and improvement.

Thank you Wilma Adkins, WikiProject Utah manager; Marilyn Markham and Patsy Hendrickson, content specialists; and Dawne Hole and (Joy) Wyzer17, communications and volunteers liaisons.

Hello Murphynw from Saguache214 - yr comment regarding St. Marylebone England 21Mar2012:  I went back and looked at what was done on that page.  It was a formatting change for the 'look' of the page rather than anything with the data.  I see that you did a rollback which would restore the page to its original 'look'.  My apologies for upsetting the norm of things.  I was doing wiki maintenance work.  Your scope of work is very, very impressive.  Thanks for being a wiki friend. Please fix the following links in the Southampton County, Virginia article[edit source]

Hello Murphynw,

In going over the mentioned article, we have found, besides a ton of information, several links that either go nowhere or to the wrong place.  In Court Minute Book of 1842-1848 images, the link is not found.  In the Will Book #1  1747-1762,  the link for the images is ok but the one for the index Pt. 1 goes to the same place.  Then, in Will Book #6, 1804-1810, the "images" and "index" are also the same.  The Feature Article Committee would like to have these fixed at your earliest convienience.  Thank you for all you do.  FA Committee

St Mary Woolnoth.... and St Helen Bishopsgate Articles.[edit source]

Hello again Murphynw,

The Featured Article Committee has been going through articles that have been nominated but not yet reviewed.  In the two above mentioned articles, it has been noted that, in the case of the St Mary Woolnoth...article, the section on the 1831 Census needs some work.  More substance.  In the case of the St Helen Bisopsgate article, The examination box needs to be removed.  Thanks again for all you are doing.

States with most county stubs[edit source]

Besides the U.S. County stubs, stubs most frequently appear on U.S. town pages that have been created and have little or no content.

Most U.S. state topic pages have graduated from being stubs.

Dead Links[edit source]

Here's a program that Lee shared that spots dead links:

In reviewing "South Carolina Emigration and Immigration" I see a number of "red" links in the Early Migration Routes section.  Can these be made "blue"?

Reordering sections with English parish articles[edit source]

Hi Nathan, I see that some of your recent edits have include moving the Parish History below some of the other section headings. It would be helpful to document this change in thinking in the pages of the WikiProject English parishes. By doing so other contributors will understand why the change has been made, so that they can help make the changes. --Steve (talk| contribs) 16:25, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Tables listing online parish register images and indexes[edit source]

Hi Nathan, I know you have been adding good content to many parish articles in the form of a table listing online sites that host images and indexes for parish registers (baptism, marriages and burials). I've been wondering if there was any reasoning behind the colours that you have chosen to use. The question I'm really asking is; are you open to a discussion about using a different colour scheme? Plus I'd be interested to learn how you are constructing the tables and if building them using a template would be a help or a hindrance to you. --Steve (talk| contribs) 16:32, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Dutchess County, New York[edit source]

The FA committee has been reviewing some of the articles on the candidates list and are finding that some of them, although having a great deal of information, there are a few blank areas as well.  We would like you to visit the Dutchess County, NY site and see if some of these blank spaces might be filled in?  Thank you for all your work.  The FA Committee

Digital journals[edit source]

Nathan, I've been deleting a lot of old short pages that are basically blank pages, but can't remember anything about the digital journals.  I've asked Sandra because she does so much of our maintenance work.  She is clearing out Portal pages right now.  Will let you know what I find out.Lynda 17:34, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Barbados Page[edit source]

Hi Murphynw. Thanks for you feedback about adding a link to the Barbados page about a Latin American site from Texas. I must admit that I was a little skeptical myself about its value to a researcher. I dug a little deeper into the Latin American site and came to the conclusion that there was really nothing of significance there that would help a researcher. I did delete the link. A good question to ask when adding a link to the Wiki is “how will the linked site help one with their research.” Thanks again. Kehoemw 21:01, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Contributor Help[edit source]

I've been going through pages that had the Historical Records template on them. Those were designed to help us alert the historical records collection team that there was a question they needed to address.  I found many that weren't really collection pages and I've changed those to the helpme template. Those are all questions from the Brits. I managed to clear out quite a few but there are 14 left. I'm wondering if someone could take a look at those and see if anything can be done with them. They're on the page. Thanks! averyld 15:50, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Incorrect contents of probate register[edit source]

Hi Nathan,

I was looking at the register of Danish probates for Frederksborg county, found at the URL below and mentioned in your August 2012 blog post:

In the description it claims to contain 10 parishes in the former Frederiksborg county, however the only parishes available when leafing through the 113 pages are (parish, county):
- Lille Lyngby, Frederiksborg
- Aarby, Holbæk
- Slaglille, Sorø
Only the first of these is mentioned in the description.

Likewise, the jurisdictions mentioned in the text are not as the description claims (in the text they are Sorø Akademi, Lerchenborg, Frb. Amtstue; the description mentions the old Kronborg county, Svanholm, Egholm, etc).

Is the description actually about a different register? I’ve tried to look at the registers to see if two were switched around, but it doesn’t appear so, and they don’t contain for instance Gilleleje-Søborg probate registers.

Suffolk Drop down menu[edit source]

Suffolk like all the other counties in England has a link at the top of the page to all the parishes in the county. I'm not sure what the logic is in putting 500 links on every parish page as well. Most of Suffolk parishes are poorly developed. To put a drop down menu with 500 links on every parish is a poor decision.
I've created a frame work on the Suffolk Civil Registration page that breaks down the parishes into hundreds and districts, nobody has yet to build on what I have created. Apparently I have to build the whole thing myself; infact, I have yet to see anyone improve on anything I have put on the wiki. I have worked on a limited number of parishes in Suffolk and what I have found is people altering my content to my dissatisfaction. With over 500 parishes in Suffolk one would think people would respect others contributions especially since over 75% of the parishes are underdeveloped. This idea of sending someone to put a simple wiki script {{Suffolk}} on every page lacks vision of how these pages will look like next year and thereafter. People should be developing and organizing the pages and not cluttering them. Donjgen 07:38, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

I somehow don't think that anyone envisioned a 500 link drop down menu on every parish page or perhaps no one did envision it, that links everything to everything. I created a frame work that connected the parishes by district. Donjgen 07:39, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

  • I was just reading the minutes of the Community Council and it seems there consensus is that the drop down menu should cover the local area of the parish such as a deanery or registration district Donjgen 02:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Suffolk Parish Records Table[edit source]

I notice that you have put a table on every parish with online coverage from various online services. It is a mistake to note all the online resources without mentioning the coverage of the Baptism and Marriage CD,s from 1754 to 1900 by deanery by the Suffolk Family History Society. I adjusted one of your tables some time ago on Laxfield, Suffolk Genealogy Donjgen 02:53, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

I have some questions, based on this post you wrote in 2006:

Thank you!

Cornwall pages[edit source]

Dear Mr Murphy:

With your recent (today) changes on the Cornwall sites, you have removed all the articles that could be accessed through the topics on the left side-bar.  I feel that there was a lot of useful information there, much of it having been contributed after much thought.  Of course, we all know that everything is subject to revision, and I support any efforts to improve what was there, but I am disappointed that all the articles were removed and not replaced with something else.   I hope that was some glitch, and not an intentional idea to remove nearly all the wiki information,

When I click on a topic forom the sidebar menu, every one of them tells me that there are no articles and tells me to start typing.  Of course I am not going to start over with a project like that, as I suppose that anything that I would put there as a replacement may also be wiped clean.

I would urge you to reconsider total removal and prehaps undertake a thoughtful revision instead.

David Coppin

Nathan, something is wrong with the Albania Genealogy page. There is a list of links for Ottoman Empire records at the bottom of the page. All the links lead to really screwy places like Georgia land records, and French notarial records, Virginia, etc. i removed the list until we can figure out what is wrong. So you would have to go into a previous version of the page to see the problem. I wonder if someone tampered with it.Hanna5974

Hi Sandra! I've talked to Nathan(he's out of the office and can't post right now). He's asked me to post that he does not want this template to be deleted as it is a part of more than 500 English parish register tables as you can see by using the What links here feature.
