Bartestree, Herefordshire Genealogy Gazetteer entries only offer one view of the history of a civil parish and this village is an example of why gazetteer material is so limited in describing.  The removal of image captions is involving additional work for contributors to restore them since a technical problem in the FamilySearch wiki is present. We would be very grateful if you would use paragraph edits only to ensure that the image caption is preserved. Whodares 15:22, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Christmas greetings from Herefordshire.

We note that you are adding Family History book references to the parish history entries and wonder whether these are duplicating information already entered also how accessible to online users the book collection of the library is for online use worldwide? In some cases your edits have removed image captions already contributed. If you edit the parish history section only this will leave image captions undisturbed. Thank you for your interest in Herefordshire contributions. Amberley 10:02, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Welcome from Herefordshire!

I note that you have been entering text from British History Online in pages for a number of English Counties.

M Ritchie "We do need to be careful about plagiarizing the very wording that other sites use to present that information. We should not steal direct quotes. If we need direct quotes (and in this case, we don't), we must attribute them."
See Copyright issue thread Forums:FamilySearch Wiki Contributors Corner dated 26 May 2011

British History Online has copyright on all text on their site; it is possible to add a link to the relevant material but the text should not be pasted into the page. The copyright question was identified by a moderator earlier this year who removed all material from the relevant page. The Gazetteer entries being added are a secondary source of parish history and whilst they can be linked to the page to allow reader to explore if they wish, pasting Text is we note not felt to be appropriate as the single content of the parish history.

I note that you have added to Westmorland pages text from British History Online. In order to avoid the need for others to remove that copyright material you may wish to re-work to provide a link to the British History Online site as others have suggested on this User talk page.

If you wish to contribute to the effort for Herefordshire parishes please do not hesitate to contact me, a number of contributors are working in the months ahead to create parish content for the diocese and it's parishes. We would rather not include gazetteer material at present as we hope to draw on local knowledge to form entries. We take M Ritchies point that gazetteer entries inserted in a parish history are unnecessary if the contributor can describe the parish other than from the writing of one year in 1848 or the later directories.Thank you for your desire to help. Herefordshire gazetteer entries have been edited to remove copyright material from British History online which claims copyright on gazettteer text which you have been adding; the image captions removed have been reinstated also. If you wish to use a gazetteer entry as a secondary source within a parish history you can cite the link to British History Online. The Herefordshire pages are in an early preparation during September-December with a group of contributors undertaking assignments. Thank you for helping, contributors for Herefordshire have chosen rather than to use gazetteer entries to form content in common with several other county contributors. In view of the large number of British History Online edits you have made would it be possible for you to rework those to remove the copyright material? I have reworked some of the pages but do not have time to do all of them; some pages like Cromwell, Nottinghamshire Genealogy require more than one image caption to be restored and the gazetteer entry is possibly unnecessary in view of the existing content Royalsarah

I've noticed that you are adding a British History Online gazetteer to Nottinghamshire pages which is a site which claims copyright. You are also editing the page and inadvertently removing image captions which need to be restored. To edit where an image is already embeded in the page use the paragraph edit which will not disturb the embedded image. Moderators will remove copyright material but you can add links to the British History online site see Bingham, Nottinghamshire Genealogy and other pages as examples. Hucknall

You may notice that a team of local contributors are building parish history content after recent completion of a basic layer of information for the county. We do not feel that the gazetteer information is necessarily helpful to the detailed parish history which is being added slowly; you will see an example of the Southwell and Nottingham Church History project link on the page quoted and we will gradually extend to cover all parishes with this information. Since contributors are at present on holiday this work will be progressing for several months in order to build each page content. We would of course be able to detect and edit links to any copyright material but you may not be aware of the copyright displayed at British History online which can be linked to the wiki page if you feel that the entry has value in addition to the planned content. Thank you for your assistance on the Nottinghamshire content.
