Tillitse Church

History[edit | edit source]

In the Tillitse parish churchyard stands a runic stone known as the "Tillitse Stone." The stone was carved around 1050 AD. It was originally built into the wall with only part of it visible but at Peder Goth Thorsen's request c.1863 it was taken out and placed in the cemetery. The stone has been written on twice. The first engraving reads as follows:

Ǣskæll Sūlka sun lēt rēsa stēn þænna æft sialfan sik. Ē mun standa, með stēnn lifiR, vitrind (vitring) sū, eR vann Ǣskæll. Kristr hialpi siōl hans ok santa Mikael.

Eskil Sulkesøn erected this stone after himself. This memorial that Eskil made will always stand while the stone lives. May Christ and Saint Michael help his soul.

The second inscription reads:

Tōki rīsti rūnaR æftiR [Þ]ōru, stiūpmōður sīna, konu gōða.

Toke ristede runerne efter sin stedmoder Thora, en god kvinde.[1]
