A caveat from Judge D.W. Prowse with respect to early censuses in Newfoundland

“X. Population in 1697”

“The fishermen purposely underrated the population. Many families of English were residing amongst the French in Placentia , St. Lawrence, Trepassey, Fortune Bay Etc ; many had migrated north of Cape Bonavista . No early returns of population are therefore satisfactory”.

D.W. Prowse A History of Newfoundland Boulder Publications ed 2002 p.698

Includes 37 Newfoundland censuses from 1675 to 1945
