Northampton, originally called Nonotuck was founded by settlers from Springfield, Massachusetts in 1654. The land purchased from the Indians cost about $200.00 in wampum and was about 100 square miles. The purchase was organized and completed by John Pynchon, Elizer Holyoke and Samuel Chapin.
