New Kent County is located in the Eastern part the Commonwealth of Virginia and named for Kent, England[1].

The county is named after the English County of Kent, England. There was a Quaker settlement in Colonial New Kent County.

1654--New Kent County was created 20 November 1654 from York and James City Counties.

Record Loss[edit | edit source]
1787, 1862, and 1865 New Kent County has suffered heavy record loss. Fire destroyed most colonial records on 15 July 1787. During the Civil War some records were destroyed in 1862. The surviving records were moved to Richmond for safekeeping, but were destroyed by the fire of 3 April 1865.[5] [6]- Lost censuses: 1790, 1800, 1890

10,000 name petition (dated: 16 October 1776) signed by Baptists and Baptist sympathizers from all over Virginia, asking for an end to persecution of Baptists by the established church.
