Lappland was colonized and Christianied by Swedish kings during the Middle Ages. Finnish and Sami minorities maintain cultual identities there today. Lapplanders left their original shamanism during the 17th and 18th centuries. The area has been characterised by Laestadian Luthernaism since the 19th century. Hydroelectricity, timber and minerals played a key role in the late 19th century during the industrialization of Sweden. Those natural reasources remain the backbone of their local economy today. The population of Lappland Province was roughly 242,100 people in 2016.
