Hong Kong (香港) , officially known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (中华人民共和国香港特别行政区) is located on the eastern Pearl River Delta. It covers an area of 1,110.18 km2(428.64 sq mi). Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire in 1842, and was transferred back to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains a separate governing system from China, under the principle of "one country, two systems". The predominant language is Cantonese. [1]
