The county was named for General Nathanael Greene. The county is located in the southwest corner of the state.[2]

History Timeline[edit | edit source]
Greene County was claimed by both Virginia and Pennsylvania until the Mason-Dixon Line was finalized in 1763-1767.[8] The county was named for General Nathanael Greene, major general in the American Revolutionary War.

Catholic

Baptist
The Baptist appear to be the earliest denomination in Greene County. Organized in 1773, the Goshen Baptist Church with thirty members by the Reverend John Corbly.[9]
Methodist
Organized by Reverend Thomas Hudson, Methodists organized in the Carmichaels area in 1784. In 1793 a log church was built for services.[9]
Presbyterian
With heavy migration of Scotch and Scotch-Irish into Greene County, the Presbyterians established churches as early as 1775.[9]
Protestant Episcopal
Because of the location of Greene County, many settlers were from Virginia and Maryland. These settlers brought their Anglican faith with them. However, after the American Revolution the Anglicans were reformed into Protestant Episcopal Churches.[9]

Probate matters in Greene County are handled by the Orphans' Court and start when the county was created.
In addition to wills and administrations, the Orphans' Court also handles: audits of accounts of executors, administrators, trustees, and guardians; distribution of estates; appointments of guardians; adoptions; appeals from the Register of Wills; inheritance tax appeals, and various petitions and motions.

Vital Records[edit | edit source]
Vital records are handled by the County Orphans' Court. Between the years 1852-1855 Pennsylvania made a failed attempt to record birth, marriage and death events at the county level. County marriage records were kept in earnest in 1885. Births and deaths, at the county level, were begun in 1893 and kept through 1905. Greene County marriages are maintained at the Greene. Greene County began recording marriages in 1885 although some registrations took place from 1852 -1854.
