WikiProject New York Gotoarrow.png Progress Chart Gotoarrow.png Tasks - Repositories: Other Libraries

Description[edit | edit source]

The purpose of this task is to find other libraries (NOT Public) with genealogical collections and list their contact information, website, collections, and databases applicable to genealogy. For example, a university or presidential library.

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Please cite at least one source for each item you add. See Albany County for examples. See also

1. To locate libraries in a county, search the following websites:

  • In New York State there is a Library Resource Council that has 9 different geographical regions that lists academic and local libraries.  For each library, there is a description of their collections.  Use this description to determine if the library has a genealogical significant collection.  For county, determine the correct regional system and search the libraries for information.
  • For Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence Counties, use this website first: Northern New York Library Network
  • Linkpendium
  • New York USGenWeb
  • Cyndi's List
  • Library guides (at University at Albany)  - click on the tab for your county
  • Google "library university [county name and state]"

2. For each county library you find, add the following:

  • Name of the library. If the library has a website, add the link to the name of the library. See the example below. If there is no website link, bold the name of the society.
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email

3. Add one or two sentences that discuss the strengths and peculiarities of the databases or collections of the library, if applicable.

4.You may also wish to include the following:

  • Rules for using the collection
  • Copy policies
  • Research help
  • Cost of entrance (if applicable)

5. If you copy a link and add it to the county page, make sure the link works.  Do not add any broken links.

6. You do not need to add state level libraries to county or town pages. (such as the New York State Library)
