Skifteretten, or the probate court, is a branch of the city court. The probate courts are responsible for determining who inherits what after a person has either died or if a couple divorces. It is important to know who the local probate authority was in order to find probate records. In many areas, especially in the large cities, the deceased’s occupation must be known as there were probate courts according to occupation. To learn more about the process of probate and what records are available please see Denmark Probate Records.
