In 1974 the former county of Cumberland was incorporated within the current county of Cumbria, England Genealogy (which also includes the former county of Westmorland, England Genealogy, the Furness area of Lancashire and the Yorkshire parish of Sedbergh)
- Records for north Cumberland (i.e. north of the River Derwent) are held at the Cumbria Archive Service, Carlisle
- Records for south Cumberland (i.e. south of the River Derwent) are held at the Cumbria Archive Service, Whitehaven
The Cumbria Archive Service also has archive centres in Barrow and Kendal
