The poor law union of Cuckfield comprises 15 parishes or places, and contains a population of 17,132.

Cuckfield and other parishes had workhouses. The Cuckfield Poor Law Union was formed on 26 March 1835 and until the 1843 opening of a new Workhouse continued to occupy the houses at Cuckfield Ardingley, Bolney, Cowfold, Hurstpierpoint, Lindfield and New Timber.
