History[edit | edit source]

The Black Hawk War was fought between the United States and several Native American tribes. It took place primarily in Illinois state and Michigan Territory (now Wisconsin). This was a conflict between the Sauk and Fox Indians led by Black Hawk, and U.S. troops. The conflict was over ownership of land in eastern Illinois. The major battle of the war was fought at the mouth of the Bad Axe River in Southern Wisconsin. As a result of the war, the Indians relinquished their claim to Illinois land in exchange for a reservation in Iowa.
