The union of Bedale,comprising 23 parishes and places, contains a population of 8596.

Bedale and Ascough both had workhouses and  originally after the Poor Law Union Act was passed Bedale was part of Northallerton Poor Law Union, Yorkshire

The Bedale Poor Law Union was formed on 28 March 1839 and some parishes previously in the Thirsk and Leyburn Poor Law Union, Yorkshire Unions were transferred. A new Union workhouse was built in 1839 at Bedale

The Union workhouse closed in the 1920's; the Beverley Union took remaining people from this Union.
