Research use: Provides excellent pedigree linkage, usually lists all family members, sometimes even brief histories are included. Records give surname access when patron does not know ancestor's town of origin.

Record type: Manuscript genealogies, pedigrees, family groups, town lineage books and card files.

Time Period: 1200-present.

Contents: Names of persons, relationships, birth or christening dates, marriage and death dates, places of birth or residence, occupations, sometimes brief histories of families and villages. Town lineage books have all families of a given town arranged into family groups.

Location: City and state archives; some in private archives.[1]
