Information about the Landskap, its location and history. Ångermanland belongs to the county of Västernorrland.
Ångermanland was first mentioned in Historia Norwegia in 1170. The area was probably christened in the 12th century. The Styresholm fort was demolished in 1434, after the Vitalie pirate brothers sieged it in 1398, holding the whole coast of Norrland. In 1721, the Russian army burnt Härnösand to the ground. The population of Ångermanland was roughly 132,200 people in 2016.
